Romanian Government approved Thursday two decisions on the national endowment programs – „Multifunctional corvette” program and „Multiple long-range ballistic missile launcher system” – HIMARS.

According to the Defence Ministry, the Government has approved the conditions and procedures for awarding a framework agreement and related subsequent contracts/multiannual contract for supplying four corvettes, built and equipped at a shipyard in Romania, as well as the initial logistical support.

„Considering the regional security situation in the Black Sea and the specific missions of the Romanian Naval Forces”, the release says that for the Romanian army „it is essential that the first corvette to be built and equipped within three years after signing the first contract subsequent to the framework agreement/multi-annual contract, and, depending on the budget allocations, the program to be completed within a maximum of seven years.”

By the participation of companies from NATO and EU member states, which have similar ships in their portfolio, delivered in the last 15 years, it is envisaged to ensure the interoperability with similar military capabilities of the EU and NATO member states, the Romanian state’s participation in developing and supporting the European industrial and technological defence base, based on capabilities, competence and competitiveness, shortening the supply chain, protecting sensitive information.

With the document adopted by the Government, the obligation to upgrade the type T22 R frigates, which are in the service of the Romanian Naval Force, has been introduced in the compensatory operations related to the program for the acquisition of the multifunctional corvettes, to obtain the compatibility of the communications equipment, sensors and weapons between the two categories of military vessels.

Also Thursday, the Romanian Government has awarded to the US Government state contracts for the acquisition of three systems with 18 launching facilities each, including, but not limited to, ammunition, control command elements, sensors, logistic support, maintenance, cryptographic and special equipment, as well as training services for all levels staff.

The acquisition is part of the „HIMARS Multiple long-range ballistic missile launcher system”.

The endowment consisting of HIMARS systems is the second “government-to-government” agreement between Romania and the US, after starting the acquisition of PATRIOT surface-to-air long-range missiles systems (HSAM) in November 2017.

For Romania, MApN concludes, the achievement of the indirect fire capability is an essential security interest and contributes significantly both to strengthening the strategic partnership with the United States of America and to meeting the commitments taken by our country within NATO.
