The National Defense Minister, Mihnea Motoc, made an official visit on 10 to 11 October in Kiev at the invitation of the Minister of Defense of Ukraine, General Stepan Poltorak.
The two officials discussed, according to the National Defense Ministry, about concrete possibilities for Romania to provide assistance and support to Ukrainian partner in the fields of military medicine, military education, reform of the security and defense sector, cyber defense, and medical treatment for military personnel wounded in armed clashes in Ukraine.
Ukrainian officials emphasized that deepening the technical- military cooperation is an important objective of the bilateral relations, remaining for the parties to examine in the next period the legal and practical ways to achieve this goal.
Against the background of complex security situation in the region, Defense Minister of Ukraine said that other priorities are the deepening of the relations with NATO and accession to the European political and economic space. In this context, the two officials discussed about enhancing the NATO-Ukraine politico-military cooperation on specific areas of strategic planning, defense reform, interoperability and contribution to the operations and missions led by NATO.
The emphasize was on the importance of the effective implementation of the Comprehensive Support Package developed by the Alliance for Ukraine, adopted at the NATO Summit in Warsaw, towards strengthening the capacity of the security and defense sector.
Regarding the cooperation under the EU auspices, the two officials discussed the importance of increasing the role of the security and defense dimension of the Eastern Partnership and the opportunities to increase Ukrainian contribution to the activities under the PSAC umbrella.
According to the ministry’s release, official talks between the two ministers focused on the developments in the regional security environment, regional and bilateral defense cooperation, as well as the ways to enhance cooperation within the NATO-Ukraine Partnership and the Eastern Partnership of the European Union.
Minister Mihnea Motoc reiterated Romania’s support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, as well as the its domestic political and economic reforms and European course.
During the visit, Minister Mihnea Motoc had a meeting with the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, Oleksandr Turchynov, with whom he discussed matters related to the priorities of defense and security cooperation between Romania and Ukraine.
The official visit also included the International Exhibition „Arms and Security 2016” and the participation in the opening ceremony of the 13th edition.
