President Klaus Iohannis assured on Tuesday that he does not intend to change in any way the result of the parliamentary elections, asking instead for PSD to govern responsibly. PSD has also the responsibility, says the head of state, to find solutions to end the crisis.
The resignation of a minister is too little, the early elections are too much, identified Klaus Iohannis the PSD’s room for manoeuvre.
The parties from the ruling coalition have not listened to the end the statement of the head of state, as PSD and ALDE left the plenary session in the middle of his speech.
Excerpts from the President’s speech, below:
“I would have liked today, in normal circumstances, at the beginning of this parliamentary mandate, to talk about important things, such as the Centenary, the country project – we all want Romania to get on better. But times are not normal, we are in crisis. Hundreds of thousands of Romanians took on the street. A recent sociological research shows that over 80% of Romanians believe we are heading towards a wrong direction.
How have we got here, in just a month since the elections? In December, PSD scored a great victory, but then, in a strange kamikaze type of strategy, had a frontal collision with a large part of society.
PSD promised something during the election campaign but went about doing something else. Your concern, as we can see, was not what you announced in your campaign. Your concern was to deal with the criminals’ case files, therefore Romanians are outraged. What shall we do, dears? What are the solutions, the room for manoeuvre to find the way out of this deadlock?
Withdrawing the Ordinance 13 and a possible dismissal of a minister are too little. But the early elections are in this phase too much. That is the room for manoeuvre. Who should come up with the solution? Those who created the problem – PSD.
The chairmen of the two Chambers ….”
PSD and ALDE groups left the room at this time of the speech.
“Tired already? Bad luck.
The chairmen of the two Chambers try to suggest that I might not digest the result of the elections, I might try something to reverse this result and want to overthrow the legitimate government. No. False.
You won, now govern, legislate. But not by any means.
Romania needs a strong government, not one that executes orders from the party. Romania needs a transparent government, in the light of day, not at the night-time, stealthily. Legislate for Romania, not a group of politicians with problems.
Lead, but lead responsibly, as society has high expectations. People voted for you because they believed you. Do what you promised. Do not mock Romania.
We are in a very good macroeconomic situation. Keep the upward trend, maintain the economic growth. We are members of NATO and the EU, the world has high expectations of us, do not disappoint them.
If PSD does not solve the crisis, I will call for consultations at Cotroceni to find possible solutions.
What nation do we want to be? A strong, prosperous one, which builds and respects the rule of law, which boasts an independent judiciary system, with authorities loyally cooperating with each other, with a strong Parliament, or a weak one, despised, to be blamed that puts everything into play to save a group politicians with problems?
I wish for a strong nation and I believe that Romanians wish for the same. That is the goal of the referendum that I will convene.
Democracy is never to be taken for granted, democracy requires education.
Let us keep democracy alive and the country clean, literally and figuratively, for the generations that follow, for Romania’s future.
