Member of the European Parliament Siegfried Muresan (photo) said in Strasbourg that the idea of a multispeed Europe is not wrong altogether, and Romania should negotiate on the proposals of the EC president, Jean-Claude Juncker, suggesting for our country to ask for the acceptance to join the Schengen area as a condition to accept this scenario for the future of the EU.
„We are at the beginning of a process of reflection and public consultations. The President of the European Commission says that the EU in its present form does not fully meet the expectations of its citizens. (…) The EU must be improved, reformed. It is a natural process. (…) The ideal scenario is for all the 27 member states together to do all these steps of integration. But we see that the appetite for integrity is different from state to state,” said Siegfried Muresan, quoted by News.ro.
He explained that Romania is „afraid of being left outside” this new project and therefore resists the idea of a multispeed Europe, but the representatives of our country should negotiate with the EU these things.
„The first thing I would say if I were the representative of the Government or the Presidency in negotiations would be: priority number one, every member state may participate in all future steps of the European integration. No criteria, conditions, quantitatively defined should exist to exclude us. (…) If I were president, minister, I would say in all negotiations: accept me in the Schengen area, as I meet the requirements, then the Romanians will be less afraid of the two-speed Europe„, said the MEP.
Muresan told that the biggest mistake Romania would make is not being part of the discussions. „The President of the European Commission launched this public consultation now. The most wrong thing that Romania would do is to say no, no, no, we do not participate in the discussion, to rip and tear. We must be part of the discussion, impose our terms,” said the MEP.
