The Senate has decided that it will put to the vote the decision to waive Calin Popescu Tariceanu’s immunity only in the spring session, that is, after February 2019.
That does not mean, though, that it will be discussed in February because senators have no time limitation. The Legal Committee has just postponed for one more week the drafting of the report on the DNA’s request for waiving the immunity of Calin Popescu Tariceanu.
On November 7, the DNA sent the Senate the request to endorse the start of the prosecution on Tariceanu’s case, who said it was a political move and expressed his conviction that there is „a lot of wastepaper” in the case file.
Calin Popescu Tariceanu is accused of receiving, during the time he was a prime minister, „material benefits” of almost USD 800,000 from an Austrian company to intervene for the conclusion of some amendments to a contract implemented by the company.
The amount received by Tariceanu represented a fee of 10 percentage points of these amendments’ value and apparently has been used for the dignitary’s benefit and was transferred based on fictitious contracts concluded with several offshore companies
Calin Popescu Tariceanu’s case file has over 70 volumes and contains over 17,000 pages.
