Defence Minister Gabriel Les (photo) announced on Wednesday that the Romanian Parliament sent the Ministry of National Defence the prior approval for launching the eight essential military endowment programs.
„The programs in question are already known to you: Mobile installation system of anti-ship missile launchers (SIML); Modernization of MLI-84M; 8 × 8 and 4 × 4 armoured staff conveyor; C4I systems with ISTAR integration capabilities; High range surface-to-air missile system (HSAM); Integrated weapon system SHORAD-VSHORAD (Stage I: SHORAD component); Multiple high range missile launcher”, as Minister Gabriel Les presented the list of procurement programs.
From this list, the program of manufacturing the 8 × 8 armoured conveyors has been delayed by the current government, as the Senate President Calin Popescu Tariceanu refused to approve a program agreed by the former Ciolos government.
In the same situation, and missing from the list presented by Minister Gabriel Les, is the project for purchasing corvettes for the Military Navy.
„The operational requirements for each of these programs have been substantiated by the specialists from the ministry, in compliance with all legal norms and procedures. I appreciated the open and firm attitude of the members of the defence committees during the meetings organized for these projects.
Today’s stage brings us closer to the final objective of starting the projects under the most advantageous conditions for the Romanian state, its army and the national specialized industry that can play an important role,” Minister Gabriel Les commented Wednesday about the approval from the Parliament.
On 28 February 2017, PSD chairman Liviu Dragnea reminded the Government that over 2% of GDP has been allocated to the defence budget and warned: „That does not mean that this money will simply be thrown away. First, we need to develop the Romanian defence system, but at the same time we must develop in an intelligent manner the relationships with our strategic partners.„
