The new registrations of motor vehicles for passengers increased by 73% in the first quarter of 2017, compared to the first quarter of 2016, according to data released on Friday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS). The contribution of the cars segment to this growth was decisive (+ 74.4%) as a result of the elimination of the environmental stamp as of 1 February.

Almost 99% of the 152,222 motor vehicles registered in Q1 2017 are cars, according to INS, but only 22,276 are new, according to data previously published by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA).

At the same time, more than 128,000 second-hand cars have been registered in the first quarter, according to the Driver License and Vehicle Registration Department (DRPCIV).

While registrations of new cars have increased by 27.5% compared to the same period in 2016, registrations of old cars almost doubled.

Evolution of car registrations

INS statistics for freight transport vehicles are less impressive: + 3.6%. There have been 17.9% more trucks registered, but fewer tractors (-8.7%) and trailers.

Compared to Q4 2016, in the first quarter of 2017, new passenger car registrations increased by 47.6% and new freight transport vehicle registrations by 7.4%.

The total number of motor vehicles in circulation in Romania reached 5.47 million in 2016, up 6.1% from 2015, according to the DRPCIV data. Only 3% were motor vehicles newer than two years old and over 20% are more than 20 years old.

The total number of road vehicles exceeded seven million units at the end of last year.
