tbt-300x188Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos announced Thursday at Europa FM that the Economy and Defence ministries are in advanced talks with the German company Rheinmetall to build an armoured personnel carrier in Romania.

Romania can produce 8 × 8 armoured personnel carriers at the Automecanica Moreni plant, probably the company that will work with the Germans from Rheinmetall.

8 × 8 TBT Program was launched in 2010 following a decision of the Ministry of Defence aimed at replacing the army’s fleet of armoured personnel carriers. The political decision was not followed by a state economic involvement in this project that only passed the initial and the prototype phases of the project.

Noteworthy is that during the Ponta government, Britain was interested in collaborating in this project, as the British ambassador to Bucharest publicly announced in 2013 the availability of the British people to provide technology support in a partnership with the factory in Moreni.

This partnership will use resources from Romania, will create jobs in our country and use the Rheinmetall technology,” said the head of Government on the discussions with the German side.

Rheinmetall is the tenth European company in the field of defence.

Prime Minister Ciolos made these remarks in the context created by the reassurance given to the Ministry of Defence to have a budget of 2% of GDP next year.

While there is a political decision and I believe that is also important for the signal we give to the outside, we shall make the effort for the defence budget to equal 2% of GDP. I would like to emphasize that part of this money goes to a program for equipping the army, to meet NATO requirements, both for defence and deterrence at home, but also to intervene in various operational theatres,” said Prime Minister Ciolos.

Part of this money will mean investments carried out in Romania. We are looking for partnerships that can help us equipping with the latest equipment. This technology should be implemented here, in Romania „, said Dacian Ciolos.
